let's do lunch

Last Friday, I had a very stressful morning. You must be thinking, uh-oh another post about stress again. Well, yes it seems like "stress" is a word that's fast becoming a constant in my work life. I had to talk to a very difficult client that morning. And guess what? it was only 9:30 am. The receptionist told me that he wanted to talk to the manager (guess who?) and no one else. I asked the security guard to let the person in. He was not tall, in fact I think I looked a bit taller in my five-foot frame in two-inch heels. His height does not seem to bother him at all. In fact, the way his voice boomed and echoed throughout the office you'd think he was six-feet tall!

He said he wanted an explanation about his contract with the company. So I took pains in explaining it to him in layman's terms as clearly as I could. And then he tells me, he does not know what I was talking about because he never read the contract! At that point I felt like pulling out those make-believe hairs on my chest. He has not read the contract! And he's asking me why he can't understand it?!

The man was becoming unreasonable and even if I tried as hard as I could he never listened to me. I talked to my boss and she told me it was best to have him talk to the Division Head, the Senior Vice President. I don't really know how our big boss did it but he turned the guy around. Note to self, get lessons on persuasion from the SVP. I escorted him outside the building and we shook hands. Odd how that meeting turned out.

When I came back to my desk I was suprised to see it was lunch time already! Ahhh, my favorite time of the day. I consider my lunch break as sacred. If I'm lucky I get to enjoy the full sixty-minutes of it. And those are really precious. It's a time when me and my friends get together and enjoy a good meal. We had lunch out and I was surprised to see a lot of people having lunch out too! I guess it's payday or probably a lot of stressed-out employees needed time away from the office as well.

Everyday my friends and I would take turns in deciding where to have lunch. Are we having Japanese food? American? Italian? Filipino? Korean? Chinese? I find it funny sometimes that being given a lot of choices makes it even harder to choose. You'll probably find it mundane but we take it seriously. =) That day we decided to deviate and try something different. We had lunch at Cafe Mediterranian .

I had this yummy Morrocan Chicken in buttered rice and side salad. Every bite was heavenly. Ha ha, I did not realize that I was closing my eyes as I enjoyed each bite. This is not the actual picture but it looked something like this. Yummy right?

Lunch for me is not just the meal. For me it means being with friends, it also meant some moments of relaxation, a time to exhale and breathe, a chance to recollect myself. It's my precious sixty-minutes of doing things that I like, no stress, no angry client, no rush report...it's all about me. So what do you think? Let's do lunch? =)

Meant to Give

I went to the supermarket this afternoon to buy some essentials and as soon as I walked into the store I was greeted by Christmas carols. I thought to myself, "gosh it's that time of the year again." And before I start to panic thinking about my christmas list I went straight to the health and beauty row of the store and quickly grabbed what I'm supposed to buy and got out as fast as I could.

It's not that I don't like Christmas, on the contrary, it's my favorite time of the year! I guess I was just not ready to review my shopping list, yet. As I walked back to my building I remembered a Christmas when our company was involved in a project called "Adopt an Angel". This project involved all the employees and a chosen orphanage. A big Christmas tree was placed in the lobby and all employees are supposed to pick a name of a child and fulfill their wish. My colleagues mostly got names of new born babies who were requesting for milk and diapers or medicines. As I was picking a name, I was expecting to read a similar request.

But boy was I wrong! I opened the paper and saw that my angel wished for a new bike and rubber shoes! I was the only one in the company who got such a request! Even the CEO only got milk and clothes as a request. Everyone was joking me around about it.

As the day of the Christmas party at the orphanage was drawing near I knew I had to buy what was requested. I thought a bike was expensive and the rubber shoes too! I could have bought something for my daughters for that price. But I thought my children always had enough of everything, toys, love, food and shelter. This boy does not even have parents! So in the spirit of Christmas I bought the bike and the rubber shoes.

I volunteered to come to the party because I wanted to see the boy's eyes as he received my gifts. When I saw the seven-year-old boy, I felt my heart crying from the inside out. He looked unkempt and lost and totally needing a lot of loving. Know what? He never left my side all throughout the party, his little hands kept searching for mine. I hugged and took care of him that afternoon and when the time came when I was to give him the gifts I was so consumed with anticipation. I knew receiving it would give him tremendous joy.

He was jumping up and down when he saw the lonely bike among the gifts gathered in one big table. When I walked towards him with it, I asked, "want to try ride your bike?". He said, "Is that really for me?!" He cried and started to hug and kiss me. He told me that he knew his request would probably not be granted...but he hoped Santa would intervene=)

You know I could never forget that boy and the tremendous love and happiness that I felt for him as I was handing over my gifts. My heart was overflowing with the feeling of joy because I made someone happy. From that moment on I thought all of us were not only receivers of gifts, we were also meant to give.

Here's a message that I received from my dad today. He says, Rivers do not drink the water they carry. Trees do not eat the fruit they bear. Clouds do not bathe in the rain they produce. We are meant to give, even if we get nothing from it. Measuring life by what others do may disappoint us, but measuring life by what we do will make life meaningful.

Life is a gift. Let's be thankful we were chosen to receive it.

Alone

I had the whole day to myself today, although my kids are at home they were having their own activities. Hubby has post-graduate classes today which starts in the morning and ends at 7:30pm. The afternoon was pretty quiet, the kids had their afternoon siesta and are both still sleeping while I'm writing this. I should be too but I did not feel like doing anything in particular.

I first thought of doing some accounting of my expenses which I enjoy doing when all is quiet in the house but I thought that was particularly boring right now. I thought of reading some of the books that I bought some weeks back but I did not feel like doing that either. Suddenly I was alone and the stillness of our room was deafening. It was a strange feeling being by myself today. As I look at both my kids sleeping soundly I wanted to wake them up and play with them right now. But I know how much they needed the sleep. They both had the flu last week and their bodies are still recovering. So I guess, that leaves you and me right now. But it's the weekend so you're probably doing somethingelse too.

Strange thoughts are crossing through my mind right now. I am again fast-forwarding my life thinking about the future. When my daughters have families of their own and don't have much time for me...wonder what hubby and I would be doing then?I have thought of travelling to different countries when I retire, writing memoirs and collecting souveniers. But I sort of feel blue and I can't seem to shake the feeling. Laughing, I scolded myself for asking for respite from the hectic life and now that I had it, I didn't know what to do with a lot of time in my hands. Ah, the irony.

It's raining outside, it's as if the skies are crying too. Adding to my feeling of loneliness. I watched a couple of old movies but that did not help too. Arrggggh! I need noise! I need to do something that will make me think. So I guess this post is what came out from that moment of insanity. Ha ha!

Happy Weekend guys! And thank you for keeping me company.

kids zone

Each day my kids rule my life and that's the way I like it. They're always on to me, asking me what I'm doing, what I'm eating, what I'm reading, why am I cleaning, why I'm blogging, what I'm blogging about, why I keep hugging them, why I keep on kissing them, why I am always fuzzing over them.....a lot of what? hows? and whys?

I don't mind that they do that but sometimes the questions gets harder and harder and I have to do research to satisfy their curiosity. My eight-year-old is a wide reader. She asks the hardest questions at most times. She reads the dictionary! She probably has a wider vocabulary than I do when I was her age. She is a voracious reader. She can read a book in 1 or 2 days if it's interesting enough. She is competing in a Math Olympiad in October on a national level. And she does most of her studying on her own. Studying and reading is her utmost interest.

My four-year-old on the other hand is more inclined towards the arts. She also loves books but she's more on to dancing especially ballet, singing and pretend play. She loves to draw and doodle in her small notebook. She also loves to ask questions about things that are new to her and she won't stop until she gets her answers. She can take care of herself and loves her independence. Today we watched the stage play Mulan at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. While we were watching the play she kept asking me when the "real" Mulan was coming. She was expecting to see the 'Disney' version and kept whispering a bit loudly to me that what we were watching was a "fake".

Here are some pictures I took recently of my two daughters. You can click the pics for a larger view.

@ the Car Show

@ the Barbie Exhibit

With Mulan the stage play actress @ the CCP

@ a Birthday Party

@ School when she performed on stage

I guess now you know how much I'm addicted to these two. =) Have stress-free day people...I just had one today.

a beacon of light

Today was the first day of my two-day seminar in Management. I thought to myself this was probably going to be one of those seminars about management, theories, principles and blah blah. I think I have attended a lot already and I was not expecting much of it. I was hoping I'd learn something new though.

Our first exercise was to group ourselves in five and do some sharing. We were to say our name and tell the group how long we've been with the company and then think of an object that could best describe us as a leader. We were five in the group and the other four managers described themselves as a mirror, a magnifying lense, a peg in a puzzle and a goose. They had their reasons of course. When it was my turn to share all I could think about was a beacon of light, like a lighthouse.

As a leader or a manager, I see myself as a torch of light that illuminates over the people as they go about their daily task, a light that guides them to the right direction. It could be in a form of encouragement, mentoring, technical support, or coaching. It is my duty to keep my light as bright as I could and take good care of it so that it will always be well lighted.

Suddenly I was again made aware of the great responsibility I had over my team. Am I just a manager or a leader? If I were not in my position would these people still follow me? If I were just me would they still listen to what I was saying?

If you are a manager then you probably know how busy our days are like. Our work life is measured in terms of success rate, timelines and goals. But every successful project or every goal achieved could not have happened without the most important part of leadership and that is the people. Without them, we wouldn't be called leaders.

There are no hard or fast rules about becoming a good leader, although there have been a lot of books written about it, it does not guarantee success. And I have read quite a lot too!

John Quincy Adams says, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, and become more then you are a leader."
